Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Smith's header the difference as men's soccer wins away at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Only one shot mattered on Saturday at Ranger Stadium and it came off the head of sophomore Thomas Smith and into the net as the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team won away to stay unbeaten in the Landmark Conference. Kelvin Del Cid only needed one save to get the clean sheet as the Blue Jays blanked Drew 1-0.

The game was more of a defensive affair as only 15 shots were recorded between the two sides over 90 minutes, and of the 15, only four were on target.

Del Cid's lone save came in the 21st minute as Jared Brown's header was on frame, but the graduate student made the stop to keep it 0-0. Andy Raab tested Drew (5-3-2, 1-1-0 Landmark) goalie Jacob Avni a minute later, but was stopped as well.

Smith had a headed chance stopped by the Rangers' defense in the 28th minute, the best opportunity of the half for Elizabethtown (4-3-2, 2-0-0 Landmark).

Pedro Lyra hit woodwork in the 63rd minute as the game remained scoreless. The Blue Jays' defense did a number on the Rangers, not allowing a shot on goal in the second half.

Late on, it was the Jude Ashley-to-Smith connection that worked for Etown. Ashley delivered a pinpoint corner to the far post, where Smith rose above the defense and headed home his first career goal to give the Jays the 1-0 lead in the 83rd minute. It was the third consecutive game that Smith has recorded at least a point.

That would prove to be all Elizabethtown would need as they closed out the game to remain unbeaten in the league.

The Blue Jays play at Juniata on Tuesday, October 3, at 7 p.m.
