Lyra's late winner lifts Blue Jays over Eagles

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team stayed unbeaten in Landmark Conference play after Pedro Lyra's late winner gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 win at Juniata Tuesday night.

Just by looking at the team stats, Elizabethtown (5-3-2, 3-0-0 Landmark) had the better of the play in nearly every category. They outshot Juniata (4-5-1, 0-3-0 Landmark) 18-4 and held a decisive advantage in corners, 9-1.

That didn't stop the Eagles from scoring first in the 18th minute as Ian Edwards put his side ahead on the first and only shot of the first half for JC.

Pedro Guizardi would equalize for the Jays in the 35th minute as he scored from the penalty spot. The game was tied 1-1 at the half.

Etown kept up the pressure and it would eventually pay off as Gavin Domsohn got a touch on the ball that was saved by goalie Axel Grater, but the rebound went straight to Lyra just outside the six yard box and the freshman one-touched the game-winner into the open net with only 41 seconds left in the game.

Kelvin Del Cid made two saves in the game as Elizabethtown moved to 3-0 in the conference to stay atop the table.

The Blue Jays will play at Susquehanna on Saturday, October 7, at 1 p.m.
