Men's soccer suffers first home setback

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team won away last season, 13th-ranked Lebanon Valley came into Ira R. Herr Field and handed the Blue Jays their first home loss of the season Wednesday night, 3-1. Aidan Valentine tallied for Etown in the loss.

Lebanon Valley (7-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a Nathan Prex goal. The Dutchmen would outshoot Etown 8-3 in the first half and led by a goal at the break.

Elizabethtown (3-3-2) picked up the offensive intensity in the second half and generated several near chances. A Thomas Smith header on a free kick opportunity was stopped by Dalton Fitterling in the 58th minute. This was coming after LVC went up 2-0 in the first few minutes of the second half.

Hayden Oldham had a scoring chance saved by Fitterling later in the second.

The Blue Jays did manage to break through with a set piece finish. Jude Ashley crossed to the back post, where Smith headed the ball across the six to an open Valentine, who rose for the ball and buried it into the back of the net in the 84th minute as EC tried to mount a furious comeback in the waning moments.

Elizabethtown pressed late but had two chances in the final five minutes blocked by Lebanon Valley defenders.

The Jays will head to Drew on Saturday, September 30, at 1 p.m.
