Men's soccer takes Landmark opener over Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team enacted a bit of revenge at Ira R. Herr Field on Saturday as they took down Scranton in the Landmark Conference opener, 2-1. Hudson Peck put home the game winner with under 11 minutes remaining as the Blue Jays held off the Royals to stay unbeaten at home.

Elizabethtown (3-2-2, 1-0 LC) grabbed the game's first goal in the 16th minute off the head of Pedro Vinent. Mehluko Letsoalo lofted a cross from the right side into the box and Vinent met the ball for his second goal of the season that gave the Jays the 1-0 lead.

Scranton (5-1-1, 0-1 LC) was back in it on Luke Roberto's second of the year in the 31st minute. His shot was one of only two shots for the Royals in the first half, though Roberto made his count as the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

The visitors would outshoot EC in the second half, 7-5, though Etown had the edge in shots on goal, 5-3 in total.

Late in the second half, with Thomas Smith pushed up the field, the sophomore came onto the ball just outside the box and flicked the ball toward the far side with the outside of his right foot. A slight touch from Guizardi guided the ball into the path of an oncoming Peck, and he slotted a right-footed curler into the right side netting of the goal with 10:53 showing on the clock that gave Elizabethtown the lead back.

After a few saves earlier in the half, goalie Kelvin Del Cid and the defense did not allow a shot on goal, let alone a shot at all, over the final 10 minutes as they saw the clock out to hand Scranton its first loss of the season.

Del Cid made two saves, both in a 30-second span, in the game. Charlie Smith had three saves for the Royals.

The Blue Jays will host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, September 27, at 7 p.m.
