LANCASTER, Pa. -- After a scoreless first half, the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to hand Lancaster Bible their first loss of the season while recording their first road win of the season.
Marissa Vandernick and
Jenna Hoffmann each scored for the Blue Jays while
Adrienne McGallicher registered her first career shutout in the victory.
The Blue Jays doubled up Lancaster Bible (5-1-0) in shots through the first 45 minutes, 6-3, but neither team could find the back of the net.
Minutes into the second half, Elizabethtown (2-3-1) worked the ball around and
Ava Whisten played back to
Olivia Myer near the right touchline. Myer was able to beat her defender and send in a cross around the penalty spot. Hoffmann touched it on to Vandernick, who finished off the play with her second goal of the season to put Etown ahead 1-0 in the 52nd minute. Myer's assist was her first career point in her first career start for EC.
While the defense and McGallicher continued to limit the Chargers to a season-low five shots and one on goal over 90 minutes, the attack sprung for a second goal, an insurance goal, with under 15 minutes to go.
Maddie McWhinney drove at goal, going at her defender and getting around her in the box. She sent a shot on frame, unable to be handled by the goalie and dropped to Hoffmann, who was placed perfectly for the rebound to net her team-leading third goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Lancaster Bible wasn't able to recover and couldn't generate much offensively as the Jays quelled the Chargers throughout.
McGallicher only needed one save to earn the clean sheet for the first time in her career.
Elizabethtown will host Scranton on Saturday, September 23, at 3:30 p.m.
