Late goal lifts Muhlenberg over women's soccer

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A late goal from Muhlenberg lifted the Mules to a 2-1 win over the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. Marissa Vandernick scored the first goal of the season for the Blue Jays in the loss.

It was even in terms of shots through 45 minutes as each side produced three apiece. Goalie Adrienne McGallicher made a diving tackle on the ball in her box late in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

Muhlenberg (1-0-0) scored in the 48th minute to grab a quick 1-0 lead shortly into the second half.

Vandernick provided the equalizer 13 minutes later in the 61st minute. Sara Bean had a throw in deep in the Mules' end. Her ball went into Ava Whisten near the end line with a defender on her back. She took a touch and then laid the ball off to Vandernick, who lofted a curler toward the far post that made it over the outstretched arms of the keeper and into the net to tie it at 1-1.

Ivy Dias was able to score the game winner in the 89th minute, finished off a cross from Casie Burke to give the Mules the 2-1 victory over Elizabethtown (0-1-0).

Bean and Whisten were each credited with assists on Vandernick's goal. McGallicher made six saves in goal for the Blue Jays.

The women's soccer team will play at Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, September 5, at 7 p.m.
