Blue Jays Seal Two Wins over Susquehanna in Final Innings

SELINSGROVE, Pa.— The Elizabethtown baseball team continues to be undefeated in the Landmark Conference after picking up the first two games of the series against Susquehanna. The Blue Jays won, 8-5 and 11-9. In both games, Etown sealed their win with three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Tyler McGonigle moved to No.1 all-time in Elizabethtown program history in base on balls as he now has 104 walks on his career. Ben Watson also surpassed 100 career RBIs as he now has 107. 

GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 8, SUSQUEHANNA 5
The first inning was scoreless before Elizabethtown struck first, scoring two in the second. Eamon McCoubrey gets on base via a walk and eventually scored on a fielder's choice decision. Watson singled through the left side for a RBI. Susquehanna cut the Blue Jays lead in half, in the third as they hit a homerun to right field.

In the fourth, Susquehanna added three more runs as they took over the lead, 3-2. The Blue Jays responded in the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits. Quinten Perilli singled to third and advanced to second on McCoubrey's single up the middle. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. AJ Bednar hit a RBI single to bring home Perilli. McGonigle hit a double to right field, scoring Bednar.

The Riverhawks tied it up, 5-5 after hitting a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the seventh. In the ninth Watson, would hit what would be the winning three-run homer down the right field line, giving the Blue Jays the 8-5 win. Zach Silfies would hold Susquehanna to a strikeout and two fly outs in the bottom half of the ninth to earn the win on the mound.
Silfies picked up his first win of the season to move to 1-2 as he struck out five. Watson went 4-5 with four RBI, one run, two doubles, and one homerun.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 11, SUSQUEHANNA 9
Game two for Elizabethtown ended with a similar result as the Blue Jays defeated Susquehanna by three after sealing their win in the final innings of the game.

Watson led off the top of the first with a double to left field. David Woolley singled on a bunt to advance Watson. Watson then scored on a ground-out double play. Etown extended their lead to 3-0 in the second. McGonigle got on base via a walk then was brought home on Garrett Schwartzbeck's homerun to right field. Susquehanna tied the game in the bottom of the second, 3-3. Perilli hit his fourth homerun of the season in the third to retake the lead.

The Blue Jays again responded with another run, scoring one run on one hit in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Riverhawks scored three runs on two hits with the score, 6-5 Susquehanna. Susquehanna scored what would be their final three runs of the game off a homerun to right center.

Etown would have a productive seventh inning scoring three runs on three hits to trail 8-9 to Susquehanna. McCoubrey and Bednar each hit a RBI, bringing the score to, 7-9 before McCoubrey would score on a wild pitch. Etown would seal the 11-9 win in the eighth with three additional runs. Mason Woolwine lead off the inning with a walk and Watson singled and advanced on an error to advance Woolwine. Woolley was walked to load the bases and Perilli would earn an RBI for being walked himself. McCoubrey singled to right center, scoring Watson. On a sacrifice fly, Woolley would run home.

Kyle Mulville got the win on the mound striking out three while Silfies earned a save with two strikeouts.

Etown steps out of conference play this Tuesday, April 18th at 3:30pm as they host Alvernia.
