Judd lifts softball to split with Ursinus

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team pounded out 18 hits in game two, but none were bigger than sophomore Ashley Judd's in the bottom of the seventh. Judd hit a game-winning two-run double to lift the Blue Jays to a game two win over Ursinus to split the non-conference doubleheader at The Nest on Thursday.

GAME 1: URSINUS 7, ELIZABETHTOWN 2
Ursinus (15-7) got the better of the Jays in the first game, scoring twice in the third and five times in the fifth as they led 7-0 through four innings.

Olivia Prosser scored on a defensive error by the Bears and then Paige Phillips singled in Brooke Huczko to make it 7-2.

Ursinus would hold on to that five-run lead to take game one. Ashley Mistichelli and Megan Thomas each had two hits for Elizabethtown (7-9).

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 13, URSINUS 12
Emily Polimeni put the Jays ahead early with a solo home run.

The Bears did not take long to answer, putting up eight runs in the top half of the second. Back came Etown, though, with seven runs of their own to tie the game at 8-8 by the third. Huczko and Polimeni drew bases loaded walks to make it 8-3. Phillips reached on a fielder's choice that scored Grace Hussey and Huczko. Mistichelli followed with an RBI double to right center. That made it 8-6. Maddie Reever and Ashley Judd each had RBI hits that tied the game.

Ursinus took the lead back in the third with two runs to put the score at 10-8. Huczko scored on an error play in the bottom of the third to pull a run back for Elizabethtown. They trailed 10-9 going into the fourth.

After 19 runs through three innings, neither side scored in the fourth or fifth.

The Bears added a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 11-9.

Polimeni and Phillips knocked in runs in the sixth as the game wound up in its second tie of the evening, 11-11.

Ursinus put the pressure on in the top of the seventh as they were able to retake the lead, 12-11, setting up a dramatic ending to game two.

Mistichelli led off with a single to left that dropped in between the shortstop and left fielder. Kristen Aydelotte then doubled to left to put runners at second and third. Reever singled to short to load the bases with no outs.

The Bears were able to throw a runner out at home on a fielder's choice to keep their one-run lead.

Judd stepped in and smacked a double, her fourth hit of the game and fourth double of the season, that found the right center gap to bring home Aydelotte and Reever and end the game in walk-off fashion, 13-12.

Five Blue Jays had multi-hit efforts in game two, led by Judd's 4-for-5 performance at the plate. Judd and Polimeni each had three RBIs for Etown in the game two win. Maddy Jean got the win, the first of her Elizabethtown career.

The softball team is scheduled to host Moravian for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 1, at 1 and 3 p.m.
