HUNTINGDON, Pa.—The Elizabethtown men's volleyball team traveled to No. 3 Juniata for a mid-week CVC match, Wednesday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles swept the Blue Jays, 3-0.
Set one saw, Juniata jump to a 10-3 lead as an Eagle error and kills from
Steve Swain and
Kyle McKiernan gave the Blue Jays their first points. Etown picked up three straight points from
Blake Hildebrand and
Nick Chapman to cut Juniata's lead, 13-8. The Eagles quickly doubled their lead to 22-12. The Blue Jays felt relief on a Juniata attack error before the Eagles grabbed the final three points to win, 25-13.
Elizabethtown and Juniata were close early with the Eagles leading, 3-2 until Juniata rattled off five straight points. A kill from Swain brought Etown within three points of Juniata. The Blue Jays then added three more points to tie up the set, 8-8 after three Juniata errors. From there the Eagles would jump to a 16-10 lead after two Blue Jay errors sandwiched Eagle kills. Etown then gained momentum as they went on a 5-1 run with help from Chapman and Swain. Through the final five, the two traded points before Juniata ultimately won, 25-22.
Juniata was quick to take the lead in the third set, after a service ace the Eagles led, 7-1. Elizabethtown cut the Eagles lead as they came within four following a Chapman kill. The Blue Jays kept Juniata's lead to five as they continued to trail, 15-10 after a service error. Swain smacked down a kill making the score, 17-13, Juniata. The Eagles tallied three straight points to lead, 20-15 before the two went back-n-forth through the end of the set. Swain recorded a kill before Juniata took the last two points to win, 25-21.
In the final two set Elizabethtown out hit Juniata with a .192 and .318 hitting percentage. Swain led the match with 12 kills (.524) and a block.
Dan Barckholtz tallied 13 assists while
Ethan Scott totaled 12.
Elizabethtown will return home in CVC play this Friday, March 31 at 6PM as they host Rutgers-Newark.
