ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start and used a strong second quarter to get in front and didn't look back as they beat Widener on Saturday at Wolf Field, 18-10.
Ben O'Connor was one of eight different goal scorers for the Blue Jays and one of three that recorded at least a hat trick for Etown in the win.
Colin Cummings put Elizabethtown (4-4) ahead with an unassisted goal three minutes into the game. That's all the Blue Jays would get for awhile as the Pride scored four straight goals to go up 4-1 with just over a minute to go in the first.
Alex Kilgour tallied twice in the final 27 seconds to make it a 4-3 game going into the second.
That's when Etown took over the non-conference affair. It was all Jays in the second as they shut out Widener (1-5) in the quarter while scoring eight unanswered in the 15-minute period.
Riley Langen started the quarter with his first of three just 55 seconds into the quarter. Then, O'Connor struck for two in a row, two of his career-high five goals in the game.
Colin Kondracki set up O'Connor for his second in the sequence. Etown led 6-4 with 11:27 to go before half.
Five different players scored to close out the half as
Ryan Flanegan, Langen, O'Connor, Kilgour, and Cummings each registered goals as Elizabethtown led 11-4 at halftime after scoring 10 unanswered goals. Cummings' second of the day came with just two seconds to go before time expired in the second quarter.
Widener closed the gap in the third, but only to five by the end of the third, 13-8. Kondracki and
Joey Killpatrick had the third quarter goals for Etown.
The Blue Jays outscored the Pride in the fourth, 5-2, including the last four goals of the game as they took a 14-10 lead and extended it to 18-10 by game's end. O'Connor, after his first half hat trick, added his final two goals in the fourth for the Jays. Langen, Killpatrick, and
Lucca Scomillio scored in the final five minutes to close out the game.
Jacob Griffin won 24-of-27 faceoffs for Elizabethtown, tied for the second-most in a single game in program history. His 16 ground balls also tied for second-most in a single game and tied his season high after grabbing 16 in the win at St. Mary's (Md.) last Saturday.
TJ Chapman was 2-for-4 in the game as the pair combined to go 26-for-31, the fifth-highest total for the Blue Jays in a game.
Lucas Kohler and
Jason Nazarenus each tied for a team-high with a pair of caused turnovers.
Brayden Franey made 10 saves in goal for the Blue Jays to get his fourth win of the year.
