Men's lacrosse suffers OT loss to Messiah

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team fell 11-10 in overtime to Messiah on Wednesday night. Joey Killpatrick and Alex Kilgour each had hat tricks in the game for the Blue Jays.

Kilgour got the scoring started with his 22nd of the season a little over two minutes in with a man up tally to get Elizabethtown ahead 1-0. Messiah would get even 43 seconds later and then take a 2-1 lead at 10:33 of the first.

The first quarter was never more than a one goal affair as Ben O'Connor tied it at 2-2 with 8:46 to go. The Falcons went back in front 4-3 before Colin Kondracki used Riley Langen's pass to make it 3-3. Connor Stewart's goal with 1:48 gave the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead going into the second.

The goal pace slowed a bit in the second quarter. Colin Cummings became the fifth different Blue Jay to register a goal in the first half as he put Etown ahead 5-3. Messiah scored the final two goals of the quarter and went into the half tied 5-5 with the Jays.

The teams went through most of the third still tied, but that was until Jesse Lynch put Messiah up 6-5 with 4:24 to go. It didn't take long for Elizabethtown to respond as Joey Killpatrick got his first of the game less than a minute later to level the contest at 6-6. Then, with just over a minute to go in the third, Killpatrick struck again for his second of the quarter to put the Jays in front 7-6 heading into the fourth. Kilgour and Langen had the assists on Killpatrick's goals, his second and third of the season.

Messiah scored twice in the first five minutes, first to tie the game, then to take the lead, 8-7. Kilgour netted his second of the night to tie the game at 8-8, but the Falcons would retake the lead with 7:53 left.

Killpatrick wasn't done for Etown as he got his first career hat trick, scoring with 4:16 on the clock to knot things up at 9-9.

A 30 second violation gave the ball back to Messiah with three minutes to go, but a Falcons' turnover at one end led to Kilgour's hat trick goal at the other as the grad student finished off the play with his third of the night to give Etown a 10-9 lead with 1:54 to go.

Chad Teresky tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation and overtime was needed to decide a winner.

In overtime, the Falcons won the opening faceoff to get possession, and after a timeout, scored the game-winner thanks to Zach Drake, to snap the Jays' two-game win streak.

Elizabethtown will host Widener on Saturday, March 18, at 12 p.m.
