ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Down two goals heading into the fourth quarter, the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team needed to rally in order to make it a second consecutive win on Saturday. The Blue Jays did just that as
Ben O'Connor,
Lucca Scomillio, and
Alex Kilgour each tallied while the Etown defense shut down the Seahawks over the final 15 minutes.
Brayden Franey made one last save in the last second to preserve the Blue Jays' 13-12 win.
After the thrill of beating Franklin & Marshall for the first time in program history on Wednesday, Elizabethtown (3-3) had to channel those emotions into a focused effort at JLR Stadium.
The lead changed hands a few times in the first quarter as Etown got out in front thanks to O'Connor's first of the game 55 seconds in.
Colin Cummings provided the assist on O'Connor's 12th of the season to make it 1-0. St. Mary's (5-3) went up 2-1 before Cummings and Kilgour scored consecutively to return the lead back to the Jays.
Riley Langen fed Kilgour's first of three in the game, his first of five assists on the afternoon. It was Langen's second five-assist game of the season, coming off his career-high six assists against F&M.
Back and forth it went as the first quarter wound down. The Seahawks would grab a 5-4 advantage going into the second.
Colin Kondracki and
Joey Killpatrick started off the second with goals for Etown as they put up four of the first five in the quarter to take an 8-6 lead. Langen recorded a pair of second-quarter goals as well. O'Connor tallied with 12 seconds to go before halftime thanks to Langen's feed and the Blue Jays were up 9-7 at the break.
As good as the second went for the attack, the third was a struggle. The Seahawks contained the Jays' offense and allowed just a single goal, to Kilgour, and outscored Elizabethtown 5-1 in the third to regain the lead and head into the final period ahead by two, 12-10.
Franey played a huge role in the Blue Jays' comeback. Seven of the junior's 10 saves in the game came in the fourth quarter alone. Killpatrick set up O'Connor for his hat trick goal early in the fourth as Etown got one back to pull within one, 12-11, with 12:43 remaining in regulation.
A little more than half the quarter to play,
Joel Maragoto forced the SMC turnover to get the Jays going the other way.
Connor Stewart's shot was saved by Ben Robertson, but O'Connor kept possession alive for Etown. It would eventually pay off with Scomillio's second of the day as Langen would find the junior for the game-tying goal with 7:06 to go.
The Blue Jays were able to survive being in a man down situation as Franey made several saves to keep the game tied.
Elizabethtown used another Franey save to keep the ball and setup the attack with 3:11 left. By 2:30, Kilgour had given the Jays the lead, completing his hat trick with his 21st of the season to make it 13-12.
St. Mary's had one last-ditch effort as time expired, and Franey made the stop, the 10th and most important one of the day, to make it two wins in a row for Elizabethtown.
Seven different players contributed goals in the win for EC.
Jacob Griffin won 19 faceoffs, tied for seventh-most in a single game, and had a team-high 16 ground balls, tied for the second-most in a game in program history.
The men's lacrosse team will host Messiah on Wednesday night at Wolf Field for a 7 p.m. non-conference night game.
