Schneider picks up first NCAA win, bows out in consolation round 1

ROANOKE, Va. -- Senior Brian Schneider made his NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships debut for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team on Friday at the Berglund Center. Schneider had three matches on the day, going 1-2, including his first NCAA win before being bowing out in consolation round one.

Schneider's first matchup of Friday's first session was D3Wrestle's No. 10 Tristan Massie of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The pair had similar avenues to the NCAA Championships as each were the 165-pound third-place finishers at their regional meets. Massie was able to get ahead of Schneider and handed the senior his first loss via major decision of the season.

The loss put Schneider into a pigtail consolation match against Washington & Lee's Harrison Kelly, needing a win to continue on in the tournament.

Schneider and Kelly felt each other out for most of the first period, though Schneider was able to gain the advantage later in the period and got Kelly on his back to score the pinfall victory, the first NCAA win of his career. The fall came at 2:15 of the first, his 10th win via fall this year, second-most on the team. It was also his team-leading 32nd win of the season.

The senior's win put him into consolation round one Friday evening, where he faced Gabe Fisher of Loras College, a D3Wrestle Honorable Mention. Fiser won the 165-pound Lower Midwest Regional bracket to qualify for NCAAs.

Fiser got in front in the first with a takedown and forced Schneider to wrestle from behind. Down two in the third, Schneider worked to try and turn Fiser over after starting the period on top. Fisher wouldn't budge and was able to hold off for a 5-2 decision to end Schneider's season at 32-5.

Schneider was the first individual qualifier for Elizabethtown since Joseph Ghione in 2018.
