ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- For the second time this season, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team bounced back after a loss and picked up a win over Catholic.
Summer McNulty pumped in 28 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead the Blue Jays to a key Landmark Conference victory at home on Wednesday night to improve Etown's home record to 11-0.
No. 20 Elizabethtown (19-2, 9-2 Landmark) has the Cardinals frustrated early on as they finished the first quarter just 1-for-14 from the field with three points. The Blue Jays led 12-3 after one.
Catholic (16-6, 7-4 Landmark) bounced back in the second quarter, and though Etown shot 70 percent from the floor, it was seven field goals on 10 attempts while CATHU went 9-for-19. Turnovers plagued the Blue Jays in the second as the Cardinals were able to get back into the game and by halftime, were down only four, 28-24.
After trailing all first half, the Cardinals took their first lead in the third and led by as many as six with 3:29 to go when Erin Doherty drilled a three from the left wing on the fast break. Catholic was ahead 44-38 as Etown called a 30-second timeout.
Taylor Huyck tipped a pass on the wing a minute later and that led to McNulty's triple at the other end to cut the deficit in half. Then,
DaniRae Renno recorded one of her season-high five blocked shots to get the ball back to the Jays. McNulty would convert both free throw attempts after she was fouled on her own putback. The sophomore was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
While the defense contained Catholic and didn't allow the Cardinals another point the rest of the third quarter after Doherty's three,
Jessica King,
Kaeli Romanowski, and another three from McNulty wrapped up the third frame for the Blue Jays as they had turned the six-point deficit into a six-point lead going into the fourth.
Cass Peris hustled to grab the offensive rebound on a missed free throw with 28 seconds left in the third and found McNulty all by her lonesome out top as she knocked down the trey.
Peris and Renno hit back-to-back buckets near midway through the fourth. Huyck found Peris out on the right wing, a step inside the arc and the junior sank the open jumper. Next time down, Romanowski penetrated and dished to Renno for the basket and the foul. Renno knocked down the freebie to make it a nine-point game as the momentum hung in favor of Elizabethtown.
Catholic tried to pull its way back into it from the outside, but the shots weren't falling. The Cardinals finished the night just 3-for-18 from the outside.
CATHU got as close as six with 1:39 left, but Romanowski's jumper in the paint essentially iced it for the Jays with 1:11 to go as they led by eight, 66-58. McNulty sank her final two foul shots of the night to give Etown the 10-point victory, as now all 11 wins at home have been by at least 10 or more.
McNulty ended her night 9-of-15 and 4-for-4 from deep for 28 points, one off her career high set back in late December. Renno added 15 points while King and Romanowski each had seven rebounds.
The Blue Jays will host third-ranked Scranton in their final home game of the season on Saturday, February 11, at 2 p.m.
