Elizabethtown Women's Basketball 2022-23 NCAA First Round Preview

PREVIEW: Women's basketball set to face Stevens in NCAA First Round

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- For the first time since the mid-90's, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball program has reached the NCAA Division III Tournament in consecutive seasons. The Blue Jays received an at-large bid on Monday and will face Stevens in the First Round on Friday, March 3, at 6 p.m.

Elizabethtown, which has spent eight straight weeks in the WBCA Div. III Coaches Top 25 Poll, will face a Stevens team also ranked in the Top 25. In the latest poll, the Ducks were three spots behind the Blue Jays at No. 21.

Both Etown and Stevens played in their conference championship games. The Jays fell to No. 3 Scranton while the Ducks were beaten by No. 8 DeSales.

It was a dream start to the season for the Jays as they got off to a 13-0 start, the best for the program since the 1986-87 campaign. Elizabethtown's 22 wins are also the most for the team since Yonnie Kauffman's Sweet 16 squad that went 25-4 in 1998-99. EC also recorded consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time since 1999-00, 2000-01.

Stevens, also at 22 wins, tied for the fourth-most wins in program history. Their appearance in the MAC Freedom Championship was also the second straight trip the program has made to the final. The Ducks' defense has been a staple this season, ranking as the ninth-best field goal percentage defense in Division III. Their three-point percentage defense also ranks ninth.

Jess Broad, a graduate student, leads Stevens with 15.0 points per game while junior Elissa Nsenkyire averaged 13.2 points per game this season. Graduate student Amber Porrett led the Freedom in rebounding at 9.5 per contest. Freshman Leyla Castro was the conference's assist-to-turnover ratio leader at 3.4.

Conversely, offense has been the name of the game for the Blue Jays all year as Etown boasts the 24th-ranked scoring offense in the country. Elizabethtown has also shot lights off from the field over the duration of 26 games, ranking fourth in Division III in field goal percentage and second in three-point percentage. Sophomores Summer McNulty and DaniRae Renno have been the shooting leaders for the Blue Jays. Both players ranked in the top 70 in field goal percentage, with Renno at 19th. McNulty's 18.2 points per game are a career-high and third in the Landmark Conference. Her scoring average puts her in the top quarter of scorers across the country. Cyleigh Wilson has been lethal from distance with 59 made threes, now fourth-most in a single season in program history. Her .437 from beyond the arc ranks her second-best in a single season currently. Wilson is the nation's third-ranked three-point shooter.

Elizabethtown and Stevens have a very brief history as the schools have only met once before. That was at the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic at Franklin & Marshall at the beginning of the 2017-18 season. The Blue Jays triumphed over the Ducks in the opening game of the tournament, 72-63.

Friday's winner will advance to Saturday's Second Round game, where they would face the winner of host Christopher Newport and Brooklyn College. Ticket prices will be $15 for chairback and $10 for general admission. For those unable to attend, links for live stats and video stream are available at etownbluejays.com.
