TOWSON, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 74-56 win at Goucher Saturday afternoon, led by
Summer McNulty's 26 points and
Cyleigh Wilson's 19. The program's 21 wins are the most since the 1998-99 season.
Goucher (3-22, 0-14 Landmark) was up on the Blue Jays early, 4-0, and led as much as 8-3 nearly halfway through the first quarter. McNulty led the comeback with a jumper in the paint.
Kaeli Romanowski got inside for a layup off McNulty's feed and then the sophomore dropped in two foul shots to give Elizabethtown (21-3, 11-3 Landmark) its first lead of the game. McNulty tied a season-high with seven made at the free throw line.
The lead changed hands two more times before the end of the quarter. McNulty hit another jumper in the paint with 1:11 left and sent the Jays ahead 13-12 into the second.
Though it took a little bit of the quarter to get going, Etown built that lead to double digits quickly. Wilson had seven straight to begin the second with back-to-back layups, including one on the fast break, and then her first triple of the game. Wilson and McNulty would each hit three treys and combined to hit 6-of-10 from beyond the arc in the game.
DaniRae Renno's layup made it a 10-point game, 24-14, as the Jays only allowed two points to the Gophers through the first eight minutes of play.
Renno and
Allyia Kennedy each had baskets inside with under 1:10 to go before the half. Goucher scored two buckets late to keep the game within 10 as Elizabethtown led 29-19.
The Gophers were able to match the Blue Jays in the quarter point for point as each side scored 19 in the third. Goucher was able to tie the game, 37-37, as they went on an 18-8 run. Etown closed out the third on an 11-1 run to get their lead back up to 10. McNulty drained a three to break the 37-37 all tie, the start of a 9-0 run all on her own. She guided the Jays to a 46-37 advantage with 1:21 showing on the clock. Romanowski knocked down to free throws to finish off the third and EC led 48-38 going into the fourth.
Must like the second, Etown turned it on in the fourth to break open the game. Wilson was a large part of that, going for 12 fourth-quarter points. The junior knocked down both three-point attempts and shot a career-best 6-for-6 at the foul line in the quarter. As a unit, Elizabethtown was 7-for-14 from the field and 10-for-12 at the line.
McNulty and Wilson both finished the game shooting over 50 percent. McNulty was 8-for-12 from the floor for her fourth consecutive 20+ point game. Wilson went 5-for-8 with three threes to tie a season-high with her 19 points. They also combined to hit 13-of-14 free throw attempts as the Jays were 18-for-23 as a team in the game, the second straight game they've hit 18 foul shots.
Elizabethtown will host Catholic in a Landmark Conference semifinal on Wednesday, February 22, at 7 p.m.
