Women's soccer moves into Landmark playoff position with win at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team was on the outside looking in when it came to the Landmark Conference playoff picture entering Saturday's matchup at Goucher. The Blue Jays came away with three points after their 1-0 win over the Gophers and moved from eighth to fifth in the standings thanks to Maddie McWhinney's game-winning goal.

Elizabethtown (4-8-3, 2-4-2 Landmark) came into the game with five points and looking up at seven other teams above them with only Saturday and next Saturday's games to go.

The Blue Jays and Gophers played each other to a 0-0 first half as neither side could find the back of the net. Etown had a slight shots' advantage over Goucher (3-5-7, 0-4-4 Landmark), 6-5, through 45 minutes.

Wasting no time out of halftime, Elizabethtown went right to work in the second half, registering three shots over the first six minutes, though the Gophers defended them well, blocking all three attempts.

In the 70th minute, McWhinney forced a save from Goucher goalie Madison Gutierrez as the ball went out for an Etown corner. On the ensuing set piece, Bailey Groff delivered the ball into the box and it eventually made its way to McWhinney, with the help of Ashley Rosati, for the senior's single-season career-high fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute to make it a 1-0 game with under 20 minutes remaining.

Jenna Hoffmann nearly made it 2-0 minutes later, but another defensive effort by the Gophers' defense kept the ball out of the goal. Hoffmann's header came on another Groff corner kick. Gutierrez then needed to make a save on Molly Kleinert's shot moments later.

The Jay's offense kept the pressure on as they maintained in Goucher's half, which in turn, meant the Gophers had little of the ball and few chances at a goal of their own. Elizabethtown only allowed one second-half shot to the hosts, which came in the 60th minute. Adrienne McGallicher did not need to make a save in the second half as she recorded her third shutout of the season.

The women's soccer team will host Lycoming on Saturday, October 28, at 3:30 p.m. in the regular season finale.
