First-half lead slips away as Greyhounds beat Blue Jays

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team had Moravian in a hole at halftime, but the Greyhounds came on strong in the second half and battled back to beat the Blue Jays 3-2 in Landmark Conference action Tuesday night.

Maddie McWhinney found the back of the net for the third time this season in the seventh minute Tuesday night to give Elizabethtown (3-8-3, 1-4-2 Landmark) the early one-up lead.

Then, just before half, Jenna Hoffmann struck for her team-leading fifth of the season with 24 seconds before time would run out. Ava Whisten provided the assist on the sophomore's goal to make it 2-0.

Moravian (7-3-4, 4-1-2 Landmark) kickstarted their second half with Carly Pyatt's goal three and a half minutes in to halve the deficit to 2-1.

Though Etown was able to maintain the 2-1 lead through much of the second half, with under 20 to go, the Greyhounds struck twice more in a five minute span.

First it was Sydney DeFranco from the penalty spot in the 75th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Lindsay Mullin put Moravian in front in the 80th minute with her third of the year.

The Jays had a last-second chance with 23 seconds on the clock, but Paige Harrison made the most important save of the night to preserve the three points at home for the Hounds.

Elizabethtown will play at Goucher on Saturday, October 21, at 3:30 p.m.
