ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team had a 1-0 lead going into the second half of play on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field against Wilkes, but the Colonels grabbed a second-half goal as the teams settled on a 1-1 draw.
The Blue Jays set themselves up well in the 19th minute as a feed to
Marissa Vandernick out wide on the far side put her near the box. Goalie Hannah Landis came out to challenge and Vandernick was able to get around her and cross to
Maddie McWhinney, who was wide open in front of goal and the senior made no mistake by burying the ball to give Elizabethtown (3-7-3, 1-3-2 Landmark) a 1-0 lead.
Etown outshot Wilkes (3-5-5, 1-3-2 Landmark) 10-3 in the first half, with starter
Rena Rankin credited with two first-half stops, though the Colonels weren't able to truly test the junior keeper as the defense in front of her were able to limit shots to outside the 18.
The Jays were unlucky not to have a two-goal lead after
Sydney Reich's attempt in the 13th minute rattled off the left post and
Ava Whisten's follow-up chance was challenge by Landis and forced wide at the right post.
Elizabethtown held much of the possession, but Wilkes did cash in on a counter opportunity midway through the second half. Cesia Diaz played Erin Edwards down the right and Edwards sent a first-time cross to Erica Feese, who was able to tuck the ball inside the far post in the 70th minute to tie the game.
The Blue Jays pressed the rest of the way, seeking the game-winning goal. Vandernick had a few chances on target, but Landis made stops on two of them. A late chance in front also went wide as the Jays and Colonels finished at 1-1.
The women's soccer team will play at Moravian on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m.
