First career goal for Abbiss caps off shutout win for men's soccer

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- There was plenty to celebrate even on a rainy Homecoming Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field for the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team. The Blue Jays put up two goals in the first half and another in the second to blank Wilkes, 3-0. James Abbiss recorded his first career goal for the Jays in the game while Pedro Guizardi had a goal and two assists for Etown.

As he did Tuesday against Catholic, Guizardi was on the board in the first half for Elizabethtown (6-5-2, 4-2-0 Landmark), though a penalty kick was not the way this time. Gavin Domsohn floated in a perfect cross, right onto the head of the Brazilian junior in front of goal and he powered home his header, his seventh of the season, to make it 1-0 for the Blue Jays.

Less than 10 minutes later, Guizardi's free kick couldn't be handled by the keeper and the rebound came right to Hudson Peck, who buried his shot lower right side to increase the lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute.

The Jays outshot Wilkes (4-5-5, 1-3-2 Landmark) 9-3 in the first half and led 2-0 at the break.

In control of the game and with the defense preventing the Colonels from building any sort of attacking momentum, Abbiss recorded the first of his career in the 57th minute off a pass from Guizardi, his second assist of the game. The Abbiss goal came off of one of 13 second-half shots for Etown.

Bryce Domsohn came in for his first action of the season late in the game to replace starter Kelvin Del Cid and the pair combined on the shutout. Del Cid needed only one save in 81 minutes as Domsohn finished out the final nine.

Elizabethtown will host Moravian on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m.
