#20 Elizabethtown races out to big lead to take down Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team raced out to a big lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they pounded Drew on Wednesday in Landmark Conference action in Thompson Gymnasium. DaniRae Renno had a huge game, her fifth double-double of the season, for the Blue Jays with a season-high 25 points and 13 rebounds. Summer McNulty recorded a career-high nine assists in the win to go along with 18 points.

It was the start No. 20 Elizabethtown (16-1, 6-1 Landmark) wanted and a nightmare for the Rangers. The Blue Jays blitzed Drew (14-4, 4-3 Landmark) to begin the game, starting off on an 11-0 run through the first six minutes until Kyra Mann got Drew on the board with her jumper at 3:12 of the first quarter.

The Rangers shot just 2-for-14 in the opening quarter while the Jays were 7-of-16 and 3-for-4 from three-point range to take a commanding 21-4 lead into the second. Lindsay Boyd sank a jumper near the end of the quarter to cap off the impressive start to the contest. That came a possession after the sophomore drilled a three.

A combination of Etown turnovers (six) and Drew offensive rebounds (five) allowed the Rangers to carve their way back into the game in the second quarter as they were able to outscore the Blue Jays 19-12. They trailed 33-23 at the half.

The ball sharing was at its finest once again for Elizabethtown as they recorded over 20 assists for the second straight game and fourth time this season. The first four baskets of the third quarter all had assists attached to them for the Jays.

McNulty dished to Jessica King on the opening possession of the third for EC as their lead went to 12 after the junior's layup. Renno came up with a steal at the other end and for a second straight time, McNulty found King for two at the basket. Boyd kept a possession alive two times down the court later and that ended with King giving it up to Renno for the lay-in. Then, Cyleigh Wilson registered one of her four assists, finding Boyd for another three. Etown led 42-26 with 6:55 left in the third.

The Rangers were unable to get themselves back into it, only getting as close as 12 while the Blue Jays pounded the paint, specifically with Renno down low.

The defense was also doing its part, especially on Drew's leading scorer Joey Meyers. Meyers, a senior, had been averaging 22.1ppg in Landmark-only games, but found herself up against Boyd and Makenna Mummert for most of the night. Meyers finished with only 13, a team-high for the Rangers, on 5-for-15 shooting as her primary defenders made life difficult all night.

Any miss was gobbled up by King and Renno, who combined to grab 23 of the team's 36 rebounds on the night. Renno had a game-high 13 boards for the Jays.

After leading by 14 at the end of the third, Boyd's three, her third of the night, with just over half the quarter left to play, made it a 20-point game. Once it got to 20, it didn't go back under as the Blue Jays held firm and kept it up at the defensive end.

The 21-point win was the 11th by 20 or more points from Elizabethtown this season and they ran their home record to 8-0.

The Blue Jays will host Susquehanna on Saturday, January 28, at 2 p.m.
