Diplomats score in each half to beat Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall scored a goal in each half as they doubled up the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team 2-1 Wednesday night in non-conference action at Ira R. Herr Field. The Blue Jays got a late goal back, but it was too little, too late for Etown as the Diplomats hung on to remain unbeaten.

Meg O'Callahan opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Her right-footed shot curled toward the back post and took a fortunate bounce off the woodwork and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for Franklin & Marshall (3-0).

F&M held the advantage in shots in the first half, outshooting the Jays 10-3 through 45 minutes.

Elizabethtown (1-2) had some better spells of possession in the second half and forced starting goalie Emma Nolan into a pair of saves. The Diplomats were also able to keep the ball out along the goal line as Jenna Hoffmann's bid for her second of the season was denied in the 60th minute. That goal would have tied the game at 1-1.

In the 80th minute, Bri Skidmore put F&M ahead 2-0. A little over five minutes later, Etown make it interesting.

Ava Whisten and Marissa Vandernick worked the ball back toward the middle of the field for Hoffmann. The freshman mid was able to maneuver her way into a shot that clanged off the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. It was her second of the season and second on her home field.

Franklin & Marshall was able to possess and run out the clock over the final four-plus minutes.

Trinity Soto finished the game with 10 saves for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, September 10, prior to their 4 p.m. matchup with Stevenson at Ira R. Herr Field.
