ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore
Hudson Peck tallied a career-high three assists leading the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team to the 5-0 victory over Mount Aloysius Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Mounties fall to 1-2 overall. The 5-0 win is the largest margin of victory since Etown topped Lancaster Bible 5-0 in 2019.
Peck registered his three assists on the first three goals of the game to finish with three points. Senior Eddie Rainey and
Ryan Hepler and sophomores
Jake Groh,
Tyler King, and
Luke Kelly each finished with a goal. Groh, Rainey, sophomore
Hayden Oldham and freshman
Pedro Vinent recorded the other assists.Â
The Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the board as Peck won a Mount Aloysius goal kick in the air starting the counter. Peck found Groh with a pass down the left side who dribbled into the penalty box. The sophomore slung a low cross into the box for Hepler who one-timed it into the back of the net for the one goal advantage just under five minutes into the match.
Just over a minute later Etown found its second of the game off a corner kick. Hudson hit a service to the center of the box where Rainey rose up and drove a header to the right post. Groh was there to meet the ball and flicked into the back of the goal for the 2-0 lead with 6:03 on the clock.
Peck and Rainey were called on again for the Blue Jays third goal of the first half as Peck lifted a corner kick into the center of the box. Rainey met the cross with a header yet again and this time left no doubt, burying the shot to put Etown up 3-0 in the 24th minute.
King stepped up next for Elizabethtown in the 41st minute when Oldham found space down the right side. The sophomore cut the ball back and found King for the curling shot to the opposite post making the halftime score 4-0.
The Blue Jays completed the scoring in the second half as Vinent stepped up for a penalty kick. The freshman's initial shot was saved but Kelly quickly rushed in and banged home the rebound for the fifth and final goal of the game.Â
Late in the game, senior goalkeeper
Ethan Higgins was called upon to preserve the shutout. The Mounties continued to pressure late and found themselves right on the doorstep for their first goal of the game. The initial Mount Aloysius shot was blocked before a second attacker looked to have an open goal. Higgins, however, managed to slide in at the last moment and save the shot before the ball was cleared off the line and out of danger giving the Blue Jays the 5-0 win and its second shutout in as many games.Â
Senior
Kelvin Del Cid (2-1) started in goal for Elizabethtown allowing no goals and facing zero shots. Higgins played the majority of the second half, making three saves. Freshman
Pedro Miranda saw his first action as a Blue Jays, coming into the game in the closing moments to complete the shutout.
Senior Tucker Hays (1-2) allowed five goals on 19 shots faced and made four saves.
Elizabethtown enters rivalry season in the coming weeks starting with a home game against #19 F&M on Saturday, September 10. Opening kickoff for the Battle for the Smith-Herr Boot is set for 7:30 p.m.
