ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- One shot decided the night as Nathan Schlessinger's first-half goal was the difference in the Smith-Herr Boot Game between the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team and visiting 19th-ranked Franklin & Marshall Saturday night at Ira R. Herr Field.

The teams spent most of the game playing between the boxes as the defenses were doing their jobs, preventing much for their goalkeepers to do outside of grabbing some crosses or punching away some corners.

Franklin & Marshall (2-1-1) netted the game's only goal in the 24th minute as Schlessinger was able to rise above and head home a corner kick from Philip Monos.

Elizabethtown (2-2) was outshot 4-0 in the first half, but played much better in the attacking third over the final 45 minutes as they outshot the Dips 8-3 in the second half.

Etown had some chances in the half to pull level. Ryan Hepler had a good look in the 56th minute, but his attempt went high of the goal. Later, Eddie Rainey's header went near post, but goalie Sam Farrell was there to grab the shot.

A few last ditch efforts with time winding down were cleared away by F&M as they hung on to keep the Smith-Herr Boot with the 1-0 win.

The Blue Jays will host Alvernia for the annual Kicks For Cancer game at Herr Field on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m.
