FREDERICK, Md. -- Seniors
Sydney Aguilar and
Grace Hussey provided a goal each as the Elizabethtown College field hockey team were on the winning side of a 2-0 scoreline this time after blanking Hood late Saturday morning.
Rachel Murphy earned her first shutout of the season in the win.
Elizabethtown (1-1) had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting Hood (0-2) by nine, 9-0. The only negative part was the Blue Jays were unable to put a ball behind Blazers' goalie Richana Brown.
59 seconds into the third quarter, Etown finally broke through. The Jays were able to repossess the ball deep in Hood's defensive end and Hussey's cross back toward the middle met the stick of Aguilar. Her sweeping shot made it through Brown and into the cage to make it 1-0 early in the second half.
The Blazers registered their first shot of the game later in the third on a corner play, but Murphy stonewalled the shot and sent the ball back out of the zone. Elizabethtown still led 1-0 at the end of three.
In the fourth, the Blue Jays were able to capitalize on a corner of their own. While the first set didn't work out, the ball stayed in the circle as
Catherine Amos nudged a ball toward the far post that took a hop up. Hussey took a check swing to knock the ball into the cage to double the lead to 2-0.
The Etown defense made life tough for Hood, only allowing two more shots in the fourth, one of which was saved by Murphy again to keep the shutout intact.
The sophomore goalie needed only two saves to earn the shutout as Aguilar and Hussey recorded their first goals of the season.
Elizabethtown will host Wilkes on Wednesday, September 7, at 4:30 p.m. in their home opener at Wolf Field.
