Blue Jays pour in three second-half goals to beat Penn State Harrisburg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After a scoreless first half between the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team and Penn State Harrisburg, the Blue Jays poured in three second-half goals to beat the Lions, 3-1. Ava Whisten, Maddie McWhinney, and Marissa Vandernick each scored goals for Etown. Trinity Soto made eight saves in goal in the win.

Neither side could create much of a real scoring chance over the first 45 minutes as Elizabethtown (4-4) held a slight advantage in shots, 5-3, going into halftime.

It didn't take long for the Jays to get cooking in the second half, however. Just 37 seconds in, Jenna Hoffmann got a touch on the ball to direct it down the right sideline for McWhinney. The right mid crossed the ball and hit Whisten, who lashed a shot from the top right of the 18 far post and tucked it inside for her first goal of the season that put Etown ahead 1-0.

Mere minutes later, it was McWhinney on the scoring end. Off a corner and a few bounces around the box, the ball found the right foot of the junior. Her shot was near identical to Whisten's as it found the left side netting of the goal 1:45 later to quickly make it 2-0 in favor of EC.

In what was a flurry of a three-minute span early in the second half, Kylee Altland got a goal back for Penn State Harrisburg (5-3-2). There was a scramble in front of the net and the ball dropped right in front of Altland, who scored from close range to make it a 2-1 game in the 49th minute.

Soto made several nice saves over the final 40 minutes as the senior and her defense did not concede another goal.

Fast forward to the 76th minute when Skylar Mumford drove a ball across the face of goal that Vandernick met for her first of the season in reverse of Mumford's goal two weeks ago against Rutgers-Camden that Vandernick set up. The two connected again to put essentially ice the game for the Blue Jays.

The Lions managed to outshoot Etown in the second half and finish the game plus-one in shots, 14-13, but the Jays made theirs count to get the two-goal victory.

The women's soccer team will host Juniata on Saturday, October 1, at 4 p.m.
