ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman starters
Jenna Hoffmann and
Skylar Mumford have a penchant for goals and the duo were at it on Saturday in the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team's 3-0 win over Juniata at Ira R. Herr Field. Hoffmann scored early for the Jays while Mumford recorded her first career brace for Etown as they dominated the Eagles over 90 minutes.
Juniata (2-7-2, 0-2 Landmark) was unable to clear the ball away near their 18 just a minute into play and Hoffmann touched it down and sent another curling shot toward the left post that evaded the outstretched fingertips of Avery Zales in goal to register her team-leading fourth goal of the season only 1:07 into the game. All four of Hoffmann's goals have come from outside the 18 this season.
In the 17th minute, Elizabethtown (5-4, 1-1 Landmark) was threatening again from the right side.
Maddie McWhinney drove at the left back and into the box. Her cross was slowed after a touch from a defender, but the ball came right to Mumford, who buried into the far side netting for her first of the game and second of the season.
The Jays had much of the possession and only allowed two shots to the Eagles in the first half. Goalie
Trinity Soto only faced one testy moment from Juniata, which came in the second half off a corner kick. A well-placed ball fell right outside the six to the head of Savanna Murray, but her header went straight to Soto in the middle of the goal.
That chance came after Mumford had put her second of the game into the back of the net for the Blue Jays. McWhinney set up
Marissa Vandernick in the box and the sophomore got deep toward the touchline, a similar play to Rutgers-Camden when she set up Mumford for her first career goal. Once again, Vandernick crossed in front of goal and right to Mumford, who was there for the tally to make it 3-0.
Murray's shot for Juniata was the only one registered for the Eagles over the last 45 minutes of play as the Jays put the clamps on defensively. Soto was relieved by
Adrienne McGallicher in the 55th minute.
Rena Rankin then came on for Etown to play the final 10 minutes.Â
Sydney Detky and
Hannah Cressman each had scoring opportunity saved by Zales late in the game. Elizabethtown outshot Juniata 22-3 in the game, the most shots in a game for the Jays this season.
The women's soccer team will travel to face TCNJ on Wednesday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m.
