EWING, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team hung tough with 15th-ranked TCNJ on the road Wednesday night, but the Lions overpowered the Blue Jays in the second half and went from a 1-0 halftime lead to a 6-1 final at Lions Stadium. Madison McWhinney netted the goal for Etown.
Elizabethtown (5-5) defended well in the first half, forcing most of TCNJ's (9-1-1) shots to come from outside the 18, making them pretty easy saves for senior goalie
Trinity Soto.
The Lions did get a fortunate bounce, or deflection, from the ball in the 32nd minute. What seemed like a ball going out of bounds by the far post ended up going off the inside of the upper far post and into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Soto made a pair of saves late in the half to keep it 1-0.
Bailey Groff, as she did in the first half, tested the Lions goalie from about 20 yards out. Her shots were low and on frame, but ultimately saved.
TCNJ opened up the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute, and then were able to put home three goals in a five-minute span with a little over 20 minutes remaining in the game.
McWhinney scored her second of the season late, in the 87th minute, off an assist from the reigning Offensive Player of the Week,
Skylar Mumford.
Elizabethtown will take on Scranton at Weiss Field on Saturday, October 8, at 4 p.m.
