ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Graduate student
Catherine Amos recorded the first goal of her career on Saturday for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, it came in a 3-1 loss to Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams.
Susquehanna (5-3, 1-0 LC) put the Blue Jays on their heels right away as Sarah McAndrews scored just 34 seconds into the contest to put the River Hawks ahead 1-0.
Etown had its first shot on goal about midway through the first quarter, but from a tight angle,
Charlize Bobbyn's attempt was stopped by Mackenzie Bross.
A more evenly played second quarter still saw the River Hawks net another goal. Rebecca Ripans followed up a saved shot and scored to make it 2-0 with under seven minutes left before the half. SU led 2-0 at the break.
Grace Hardy had a deflected chance go on goal, but Bross saved the shot to keep it 2-0. A minute later, Susquehanna was on the board again as Sophia Prata stuck with the play and scored on her own rebound.
Elizabethtown (4-4, 0-1 LC) used a penalty corner to cut into the deficit later in the third.
Riley Stephan inserted the ball out top and it made its way to
Chloe Smith. Smith put a shot on goal, but it was blocked by Bross. The rebound went to Amos, who was able to score to make it 3-1.
The Jays continued to battle, in search of more goals. Smith and
Megan Meyer had chances saved early in the fourth. A late defensive save from the River Hawks kept it 3-1.
Rachel Murphy made two saves in the fourth to keep it a two-goal game.
Murphy made seven saves in total in the game while Bross had five in the win.
The Blue Jays will head to York (Pa.) on Wednesday, September 28, for a 6 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Spartans.
