ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team battled nationally-ranked No. 2 Messiah in the annual Marshmallow Game Wednesday at Ira R. Herr Field, but the Falcons prevailed 3-0.
Messiah (6-0-1), who recently moved from fifth to second in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings, were on the board in the 13th minute as Ben Lefever pounced on a ball in the box that came off the head of Luke Groothoff.Â
Then, in the 32nd minute, Davis Pagett doubled the advantage to 2-0.
The Falcons' held the majority of the possession in the first half.
Ryan Hepler had Elizabethtown's (2-4-1) lone opportunity in the first half, but his shot was left of the post.
Messiah went up 3-0 on an own goal by the Blue Jays in the 53rd minute, which would wind up being the final goal of the night between either side.
Gavin Domsohn and
Hayden Oldham each had shot attempts off the mark for Etown in the second half as the Falcons outshot the Jays, 16-3.
Kelvin Del Cid finished the night with six saves for EC.
Elizabethtown begins Landmark Conference play this weekend at Susquehanna on Saturday, September 24.
