ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown field hockey team played with complete effort Wednesday evening as the Blue Jays defeated Haverford, 3-2 in overtime. Senior,
Chloe Smith netted her first career hat-trick on two penalty strokes and the game-winning overtime goal.
Elizabethtown field hockey held strong as they were on defensive side through the majority of the first half. Haverford took control early in the game tallying eight shots in the first quarter. The Fords also earned four penalty corners in the first quarter while allowing Elizabethtown zero. The Blue Jays lone shot came in the first half in the second quarter when Smith scored off a penalty stroke. Smith fired a shot to the upper left side of the goalkeeper to take a, 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Elizabethtown took their first penalty corner of the game and then registered two shots shortly after. With another penalty in the arch, Smith once again took a penalty stroke for the Jays. Smith again put the ball in the upper left side just past the goalkeeper. Through the end of the third, the Fords took three more corners and added a shot.
The fourth quarter was more interesting as Haverford tied up the game, 2-2 after scoring just seconds into the quarter and then again five minutes later. Haverford held possession through the fourth taking eight corners. After regulation the teams were tied which forced an overtime period.
Haverford started off the overtime with possession until an Elizabethtown penalty corner. Shortly after the Blue Jays corner,
Megan Meyer assisted Smith on the game-winning goal.
Haverford out shot Elizabethtown, 20-5 and also held the advantage in corners, 23-2.
Rachel Murphy recorded 11 saves in the net for Etown.
Elizabethtown returns home this Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 PM as they host Stockton.
