ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Senior goalie
Trinity Soto made a couple key saves for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team Tuesday night against visiting Rutgers-Camden. Soto stopped eight shots and
Skylar Mumford's first career goal was the difference as Etown blanked the Scarlet Raptors 1-0 on Ira R. Herr Field.
Elizabethtown (3-2) had the momentum from the start as they pressured RUC right away.
Marissa Vandernick registered the game's first shot in the first minute, forcing the Scarlet Raptors goalie, Kayla McKeever, into an early save.
In the 10th minute, Vandernick got loose down the left side and made her way toward goal. Driving in on the keeper, she dished the ball with a left-footed square pass across the six and a wide open Mumford was there to tap it in for the first of her career to make it 1-0 for the Jays.
From that point, Rutgers-Camden (0-3-1) settled into the match and began to take control. Soto made saves in the 28th, 36th, and 42nd minutes to keep it level going into halftime.
Mumford,
Maddie McWhinney, and
Sydney Detky each had chances early in the second half, but Michaela Graham made three saves on the three attempts. Graham came on for McKeever at the half.
Soto was needed for back-to-back saves in the 61st minute. RUC had chances in on goal, but the senior keep made the stops.
Her most important, and impressive, save came in the 73rd minute. Maresa Savarese was one of the more dangerous players on the attack for the Scarlet Raptors all night and the ball got to her into the 18 with nothing between her and Soto. Soto came out to cut down her angle and made the save on Savarese's shot to maintain her clean sheet.Â
The Blue Jays didn't allow another shot on goal the remainder of the game as Soto earned her second shutout of the season.
Elizabethtown will head to York (Pa.) on Saturday, September 17, for a noon time kickoff against the Spartans.
