YORK, Pa. - York College scored two unanswered goals, one in each half, as Elizabethtown College fell in its season opener, 2-1, Thursday evening.
Sophomore
Jake Groh scored the lone goal for the Blue Jays while fifth-year senior
Ed Rainey and sophomore
Pedro Guizardi each tallied assists.
Scoring for the Spartans was junior Tyler Howlett and sophomore Dermot Williamson. Junior Luke Nall came away with an assist.
Elizabethtown managed to get on the board first off a corner kick. Guizardi hit a service to the back post. Rainey rose up and put a header on goal that was saved. Groh however pounced on the rebound and buried it for the early advantage in the ninth minute.
York responded in the 24th minute as nall collected a blocked shot from the touch line and sent a cross over the outstretched hands of senior
Kelvin Del Cid. Howlett met the ball and one-timed it into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
The Spartans game-winner came in the secon half as a corner was lumped into the box by York. After a mad scramble in the box, the ball squirted out to Williamson who buried into the back of the net from 10-yards out for the 2-1 advantage. Etown attempted to rally but couldn't find the back of the net as the Spartans held on for the 2-1 win.
Del Cid (0-1) made three saves and allowed two goals on six shots faced. Sophomore Mason Boyd (1-0) made a game-high five saves, giving up the lone tally on six shots faced.
Elizabethtown returns to action on Sunday, September 4 against Eastern Mennonite on day one of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic. Kickoff for the home opener is set for 4 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
