AMBLER, Pa. - Trailing Husson 13-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Elizabethtown College baseball team came charging back with 10 runs over the final four innings before falling by one run, 13-12, to close out its season and the NCAA Regional Tournament Saturday afternoon.
POSTGAME INTERVIEW
With the loss, the Blue Jays finish the season 22-22, while the Eagles improve to 25-16 and will play the loser of the Arcadia, Oswego State game later this evening.
Junior
Ben Watson finished the game 4-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBI. Senior
Robbie Bertucio had two doubles with two RBI and a run scored. Senior
Tyler McGonigle and
Joey Thomas each tallied a double as well.
Ethan Stoddard paced the Husson offense, going 3-4 with two double, a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored.
After finding two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Jays' bats came alive in the next inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Thomas laced a double down the right field line, scoring freshman
RJ Agriss and sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck and making the score 13-7. A few batters later, graduate student
Andrew Fisher brought Thomas in from third, grounding out to the shortstop, to bring the score to 13-8. Etown completed it scoring in the seventh, taking advantage of a failed pickoff by the pitcher to plate McGonigle and move the Blue Jays with four at 13-9.
Etown was unable to find any runs in the eighth before putting on one final surge in the bottom of the ninth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Watson stepped in and mashed a single to right field, scoring Thomas and McGonigle closing the gap to two (13-11). Bertucio then traded places with Watson one batter later, knocking a double to left center field, brining the Blue Jays all the way back within one at 13-12. That, however, is as close as Etown would get as the second basemen Akira Warren mad a diving play to stab a line drive and preserve the win for Husson.
Freshman
Kyle Mulville (2-2) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on five hits and struck out two.Â
Freshman Matt Wallingford (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Eagles, pitching four innings and allowing one run on two hits and striking out four.
Elizabethtown finishes the season with first Landmark Conference Championship and NCAA appearance since 2017. Thank you to all of our seniors and graduate students for their commitment to the baseball program.
