WASHINGTON. D.C. - The Elizabethtown College had two shots with 10 seconds left in the game, but could not find the equalizer, falling to Catholic, 14-13, Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Cardinals improve to 7-3 on the season and 3-0 in the Landmark.
Seniors
Owen Yake and
Nick Cost paced the Etown offense, registering four points as Yake finished with three goals and an assist and Cost tallied four assists. Classmate
Micah Ballew and junior
Riley Langen each recorded a hat trick and sophomore
Gavin Gismondi scored two goals and added one assist. Junior
Colin Cummings finished with three assists.Â
Senior Sean Baudo led Catholic with a game-high five goals and one assist.
Trailing 4-3 with 10:50 remaining in the second quarter, the Blue Jays responded with back-to-back goals from senior
Alex Kilgour and Yake, pushing Etown to the 5-4 lead with 8:45 on the clock. The Blue Jays continued the run with a goal by Gismondi with just over seven minutes remaining in the period to increase its advantage to two (6-4). A Yake goal with 19 seconds remaining off set two goals from the Cardinals to make the score 7-6 at the break.
After Catholic took a 10-9 lead going into the fourth quarter, Etown once again rallied, opening the final period with goals from Ballew and Langen to take a 11-10 lead with 11:09 on the clock. The Cardinals then snatched the momentum back, using a 4-0 advantage to move in front 14-11 with just over three minutes left in the game. The see saw of momentum continued starting with a solo effort from Gismondi to cut the deficit to two (14-12), followed by Yake taking a pass from Cost to close within one (14-13) with 1:12 remaining. The Blue Jays managed one final effort on offense, creating two shots in the final 10 seconds but could not convert, dropping their first conference game of the season by a final score of 14-13.
Sophomore
Brayden Franey (6-5) made a career-high 22 saves on 54 shots faced. His 22 saves is tied for third most in a single game.Â
Junior Nic Pezone (7-3) made a season-high 23 saves on 56 shots faced in the winning effort.
Seniors
Wes Mills and
Danny Gilbert each finished with a team-high five ground balls.
Elizabethtown returns home on Saturday, April 16 to take on Juniata. Opening face-off is set for 1 P.M.
