ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Graduate student
Kaitlyn Witmer collected her 100th career hit for the Elizabethtown College softball team on Wednesday against Juniata, but the Eagles were able to sweep the Blue Jays in the Landmark Conference action at The Nest. Juniata took game one 6-4 and then outlasted Etown in nine innings, 4-1.
GAME 1: JUNIATA 6, ELIZABETHTOWN 4
The Eagles led 4-0 after the second inning, putting Elizabethtown (14-22, 1-9 Landmark) behind early on. Witmer singled in her first at-bat to get her to 100 career hits.
Ashley Mistichelli fouled out to right, but deep enough to allow
Kristen Aydelotte to score from third and break up the shutout.
After Juniata (11-21, 3-7 Landmark) got the run back in the fourth, the Blue Jays rallied in the fifth.
Kadyn Crisswell singled through the left side to make it 5-2. Then,
Jenna Davis sent a ball through the left side to bring home two more and all of a sudden with two swings of the bat, Etown trailed by just one, 5-4.
Juniata added a run in the seventh for bit of breathing room and it was enough as they held off the Jays in the seventh to take game one.
GAME 2: JUNIATA 4, ELIZABETHTOWN 1 (F/9)
Tori Caputo pitched effectively for Elizabethtown in game two, but so did her counterpart in the circle, Cate Baran.
Neither team could put up a run on the other through five innings. The Eagles broke through with a run in the sixth, but the Blue Jays answered right back as Witmer's ball fell in between fielders to allow
Paige Phillips to score and tie the game at 1-1.
Extra innings were needed and the game went into the ninth before a side produced any runs. Unfortunately for Etown, it was Juniata that did so.
The Eagles were able to plate three runs to jump ahead 4-1. Baran then retired the side in order in the bottom half of the ninth to finish off the sweep for Juniata.
Witmer, Crisswell, and
Megan Thomas each had hits in the second game for the Jays.
Elizabethtown will play at Moravian on Saturday, April 30, at 1 and 3 p.m.
