ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Trailing after four innings, nationally-ranked Shenandoah tied the game in the fifth and took the lead in the ninth to avoid an upset to the Elizabethtown College baseball team.
Tyler McGonigle hit his third home run of the season and
AJ Bednar drove in a run as the Blue Jays fell to the Hornets in non-conference action, 4-3.
Shenandoah (25-8-1) produced a run in the first on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, but
Ben Watson didn't allow another run over the next three innings while his offense supplied him with three runs.
Joe Limongelli drew a two-out walk in the third inning and didn't have to wait long as the next batter, McGonigle, launched a two-run dinger over the left field fence to give Elizabethtown (17-17) a 2-1 lead.
Watson then led off the fourth with a double to right center. The Blue Jays went with some small ball with no outs as
Robbie Bertucio moved Watson up to third with the sac bunt. The junior scored easily on Bednar's double that landed a little inside the right field line and into the corner. Etown increased the lead to 3-1 with the RBI.Â
The Hornets came back in the fifth and got two runs back to tie the game at 3-3.
That's where the score stayed through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings as neither side could punch through and grab the lead again.
Shenandoah got a one-out triple that turned into a run on defensive miscue and the Hornets went back in front by a run, 4-3.
Matt House came on in relief for SU and earned his eighth save, retiring the side in order to finish off the game.
McGonigle ended the day with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, including the homer, two RBIs, and a run scored. Watson, Bertucio, Bednar, and
Garrett Schwartzbeck also had hits for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown will travel to Messiah on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Falcons. First pitch of the day is scheduled for 12 p.m.
