ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team celebrated its seniors on Saturday at The Nest prior to their Landmark Conference doubleheader with visiting Catholic. In a pair of low scoring affairs, the Cardinals won each game. Catholic took game one, 2-1, and completed the sweep with a 2-0 win in game two.
Paige Phillips had a double and an RBI in game one for Etown.
GAME 1: CATHOLIC 2, ELIZABETHTOWN 1
Neither starter gave up a run through the first three innings as Katie Hurd and Phillips locked down the opposing offenses.
Kaitlyn Witmer singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to put a runner on with one out. With
Jenna Davis on as a pinch runner and two outs, Phillips drove a double to the fence in right center. Davis flew around second and third and scored to make it 1-0 for Elizabethtown (11-19, 1-7 Landmark).
That lead didn't last long as Sarah Spaeth hit a solo home run to left in the top of the fifth to tie the game. An inning later, Mikayla Czan singled to bring home another run that gave Catholic (12-10, 5-3 Landmark) a 2-1 lead.
Hurd didn't allow another run and closed out the Jays in the seventh to give the Cardinals the game-one win. Witmer and
Grace Hussey each had two hits for Etown.
GAME 2: CATHOLIC 2, ELIZABETHTOWN 0
In game two, it was Catholic that took the lead first, this time in the first on an RBI ground out. They would put up another run in the third and that's all Justina Benvenuto would need.
Elizabethtown had opportunities to cash in, but Benvenuto was able to stave any off damage. The Jays had runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, but couldn't generate the runs needed.
Benvenuto pitched the complete game shutout to get the win with four strikeouts. Phillips threw her second complete game of the day. She had one strikeout in game two.
Hussey had two hits for the second time on the day and
Amelia Lark also contributed a multi-hit effort and made several nice plays in left field defensively for Etown.
The softball team will play at Penn State Schuylkill on Wednesday, April 20. Game times are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
