SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. -- Senior
Paige Phillips struck out a career-high eight batters and
Harley Rife pitched a complete game to cap off the Elizabethtown College softball team's sweep at Penn State Schuylkill on Wednesday. The Blue Jays won 1-0 in game one before a 7-3 victory in game two.
Kadyn Crisswell hit her fifth home run of the season for the Blue Jays.
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 1, PENN STATE SCHUYLKILL 0
While Phillips limited Penn State Schuylkill (17-8) to just two hits in the game, the Blue Jays weren't able to take advantage until the sixth inning.
Kristen Aydelotte led off with a double to put one on with no outs in the top half of the sixth.
Gillian Toomey stepped in as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to put two on with no outs. A flyout to center was deep enough to allow Aydelotte to advance to third, which turned out to be a key play.
With Crisswell up to bat, a wild pitch got away and Aydelotte scampered home to score and give Elizabethtown (13-19) the 1-0 lead.
That's all Phillips needed as she cruised through seven innings for her 12th complete game of the season and second shutout, both career highs for the Victor, N.Y. native. The win was her eighth of the season.
GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 7, PENN STATE SCHUYLKILL 3
The Jays trailed twice in game two, first down 1-0 after the first inning and then 3-1 after tying the game in the top half of the third on a
Megan Thomas RBI. The Lions scored twice in the bottom half to regain the lead.
Etown took its first lead with a four-run fourth thanks to
Ashley Mistichelli and Crisswell. Mistichelli singled in
Olivia Prosser to make it a 3-2 game. With two on, Crisswell smacked her team-leading fifth home run of the season to tack on three more runs and give the Jays a 5-3 lead.
Grace Hussey brought in a run in the fifth as
Cassidy Dodds scored to make it 6-3. Prosser added an RBI in the seventh to finish out the scoring at 7-3.
Rife tossed her second complete game of the season and earned her third win. She allowed just four hits and struck out one over her seven innings of work.
The softball team will host Lebanon Valley on Sunday, April 24, at 1 and 3 p.m.
