ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Paige Phillips recorded her 100th career strikeout and
Kristen Aydelotte her first career home run for the Elizabethtown College softball team on Tuesday as the Blue Jays split with Hood on the day. The Blazers narrowly won game one, 3-2, but Etown took game two, 10-7.
Harley Rife got the win for the Jays in the second game.
GAME 1: HOOD 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 2
It was a pitcher's duel in the opener as Rebecca Gottlieb and
Paige Phillips each shut down the opposing offense through six innings.
Phillips started the day sitting on 99 career strikeouts and got the first batter of the game swinging to hit the century mark. She would tie a career-high with seven Ks in the game.
Hood (13-14-1) drew seven walks, but left nine runners on base as Phillips was able to work out of a few jams.
One swing of the bat was really the difference as Jocelyn Pfleiger homered in the top of the seventh, a three-run shot, to make it 3-0. Elizabethtown (11-17) made it interesting in the bottom half. Phillips singled to put the leadoff runner on.
Jenna Davis pinch ran for the senior and
Cassidy Dodds came up to pinch hit. She sent a double down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position for Aydelotte. The freshman drove a ball to left center to knock in both runners and make it 3-2 with no outs and the game-tying run on second.
Gottlieb then retired the side without any further damage and got the Blazers the game-one win.
GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 10, HOOD 7
Hood went ahead 3-0 in the top half of the first, but the Jays didn't waste any time putting some runs on the board of their own. That started with Aydelotte's leadoff homer, the first of her career, that cleared the left field fencing to get Etown its first of four runs. With
Kaitlyn Witmer,
Ashley Mistichelli, and
Kadyn Crisswell all on base, Dodds tripled down the left field line, clearing the bases as all three Blue Jays crossed home to give Elizabethtown a 4-3 lead.
The Blazers scored another three in the third to retake the lead, 6-4.
A big fourth inning helped the Jays go back in front. Aydelotte and
Gillian Toomey each got on with one out after being hit by pitches. Witmer doubled to left center to score Aydelotte from second. A Crisswell one-out walk loaded the bases once again for Etown. Davis brought one home with a fielder's choice RBI to tie it, 6-6.
A throwing error cost the Blazers two runs as Crisswell and
Olivia Prosser, a pinch-runner, scored on the play.
Grace Hussey added a two-RBI single to center to make it 10-6.
Rife, who came on in relief with one out in the first, kept Hood at bay and maintained the Jays' four-run lead into the seventh. The Blazers got a run back to bring them within three, but she got a two-out fly ball to Crisswell in center and the freshman closed her glove around the ball to end it and earn the Blue Jays the split with the 10-7 win.Â
Rife threw 6.2 innings with three strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Elizabethtown will host Catholic on Saturday, April 16, at 1 and 3 p.m. at The Nest.
