Baseball Earns Split on Final Day in Florida

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team split with Monmouth, falling in game one, 5-4, before taking game two, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the split, the Blue Jays move to 4-6 on the season, while the Fighting Scots start the year at 1-1.

GAME ONE: MONMOUTH 5 ELIZABETHTOWN 4

Etown battled back to take a 4-3 lead heading into the final inning, but couldn't complete the comeback, dropping game one to Monmouth 5-4.

Sophomore Garrett Schwartzbeck finished the game 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Seniors James Vito and Robbie Bertucio each went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore AJ Bednar tallied his first multi-hit game of the season with two.

The Fighting Scots were paced by sophomore Raul Guillermo III, going 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored.

Falling behind 3-0 after the third inning, the Blue Jays tied the game in the fourth. Stepping in with runners on first and second, Vito knocked a single to left field, scoring Bertucio from second and movie Bednar up to second. Schwartzbeck kept the rally going, slapping a double to left field and clearing the bases to knot the score at three.

Etown then moved in front in the top of the seventh, as Bertucio came to bat with runners on first and second with two outs. The senior came through, hitting a single to center field to score classmate Joey Thomas from third to move in front 4-3.

Monmouth, however, took advantage of two errors by the Blue Jays, scoring to unearned runs for the 5-4 win.

Graduate Student Tyler Dunbar (1-2) allowed three earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven in the loss. He leads the Landmark with 17 strikeouts.

Junior Nicholas Corman (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out one.

GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 5 MONMOUTH 4

The Blue Jays found themselves in a hole once again, but completed the comeback in game two, topping the Fighting Scots 5-4.

Junior Ben Watson went 3-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored. With his first triple of the season, Watson now has 10 career triples, moving him into a tie for eighth in program history. Thomas finished game two 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Bednar hit his first career triple.

Falling behind 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Etown began to chip away. With a runner on first, Watson smashed a triple, plating Thomas and cutting the deficit to three (4-1). Bertucio stepped in net and hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring the score to 4-2. The Blue Jays made the score 4-3 at the end of five after junior Zach Silfies reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, scoring Bednar from third and closing the gap to one run.

Elizabethtown took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth, starting with an RBI single from Thomas to plate Schwartzbeck and tie the game four. Watson then completed the comeback for the Blue Jays, hitting a double to score Thomas once again and give Etown the 5-4 lead heading into the final inning.

Watson then shut the door in the bottom of the inning, recording three strikeouts and ending the annual spring break trip on a high note with the 5-4 victory.

Sophomore Justin Peterson (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out two. Watson registered his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning.

Senior Eli Herrera (0-1) took the loss in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

Elizabethtown returns to action next Saturday, March 12 with the start of a three-game series against #8 Salisbury. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
