Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Second quarter plays big role in Scranton's win over women's lacrosse

SCRANTON, Pa. -- While three of the four quarters were one or two-goal differences, it was the second quarter for Scranton that made a big difference in their 18-9 win over the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team Saturday night at Weiss Field. Kate Ziegler recorded a hat trick while Sam Deiaco and Megan Gress each had multi-goal efforts.

It was 1-1 through the first five minutes of action as Scranton (4-4, 1-0 Landmark) got the first goal, but Ziegler responded for the Blue Jays with her 31st of the season and first of three in the game. Gress then scored her first of two with a little over three minutes to go in the opening quarter to give Elizabethtown (1-8, 0-1 Landmark) the 2-1 lead. The Royals scored the final three goals of the first and led 4-2 after one.

Four different goal scorers for the Royals put up six goals for the hosts as they shut out the Blue Jays in the second, 6-0. Scranton led 10-2 at halftime.

Deiaco scored twice and Ziegler another as Etown registered the first three goals of the third quarter that cut the lead in half, 10-5. Ziegler provided an assist on Deiaco's first goal while Hannah Cressman had assists on the other two goals in the three-goal spurt from Elizabethtown.

Though down a player, the Royals scored twice and then once they were back to even, got another goal to restore the eight-goal lead before Ziegler cinched up her hat trick with her 32nd of the year near the end of the third.

While the Jays hung tough and got within six after Alexis Patterson's goal to make it 15-9, Scranton proved too much as they closed out the game on a 3-0 run and beat Etown 18-9.

Ziegler and Cressman each had four points for the Blue Jays. Cassidy Pawlicki had four caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Elizabethtown will host Drew on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
