ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball celebrated senior
Tim Zeiber before the start of the teams second match, as the Blue Jays fell to Randolph-Macon, 3-0, before sweeping Neumann to complete a split Saturday afternoon.
Etown finished the day with a 13-10 record over all and a 2-5 mark in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play. The Yellow Jackets won both of their matches to move to 15-9 on the season and 3-4 in the league. The Knights end the season 7-14.
MATCH ONE: RANDOLPH-MACON 3 ELIZABETHTOWN 0
Randolph-Macon opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Elizabethtown for its third CVC victory of the season.
The Blue Jays were paced by juniors
Blake Hildebrand and
Steve Swain. Hildebrand finished with a team-high 12 kills and six digs, while Swain tallied 10 kills and a team-best six digs. Sophomore
Nate Seeger racked up 29 assists.
Sophomore Drew Klein hit .333 with a team-high 12 kills to pace the Yellow Jackets.
Trailing 10-9 early in the first set, Etown rattled off four consecutive points, capped off by a block from junior
Tony Camillo and sophomore
Nick Chapman, to take a 13-10 lead. Randolph-Macon responded, going on an 8-1 run to reclaim the advantage at 18-14. The Blue Jays would close within one four more time throughout the opening frame, but could not get over the hump, falling to the Yellow Jackets 25-21 in set one.
After a dominating 25-13 victory in set two by the visitors, Etown looked primed to bound back in the third set. Trailing by three (7-4), Etown closed within one thanks to a kill and ace by Hildebrand. A few points later, Etown tied the match at nine as Seeger found Chapman for the kill. The Blue Jays then finally took the lead, rattling off three consecutive points, capped off by an ace from
Dan Barckholtz, to move ahead 14-13. To two teams continued to flip-flop the lead all the way to 24-24 when a block by Hildebrand and junior
Cheston Jacobs put the Blue Jays in front 25-24. The back-and-forth trend continued all the way to 26-26 when the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep, scoring the final two points for the 28-26 win.
MATCH TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 3 NEUMANN 0
The Blue Jays scored their 13th win of the season, sweeping Neumann to complete Saturday's tri-match.
Zeiber highlighted the final match of the day for Etown, finishing with seven digs, six kills, five assists, and three aces. Freshman
Kyle McKiernan hit .600 with 10 kills and Barckholtz recorded 22 assists. Sophomore
Dylan Holland recorded a team-high three block assists.
Senior Eric Van Horn and junior TJ McConnell led the Knights with five kills each.
Holding a 9-6 lead in the opening frame, Etown went on a 4-0 run, highlited by two kills from McKiernan and a kill from sophomore
Eric Hierl, to move ahead 13-6. Neumann bounced back to close within four (14-10), but a 4-1 spurt by the Blue Jays, capped off by a kill from Zeiber, put Etown back in front by seven at 18-11. The Blue Jays road this final surge to 25-18 opening set win.
It was more of the same in set two, as Etown rolled out to a 10-3 lead after back-to-back kills from Zeiber followed by a kill from McKiernan. The Blue Jays continued to stay in front all the way to 18-13 when Etown finished the second set on a 7-0 run, taking the middle frame 25-13. Zeiber served the final six points, including three consecutive aces to end it.
In the third and final set, Neumann held an 8-7 advantage early in the frame. The Blue Jays answered, scoring four straight points behind two kills from freshman
Isaiah Eddings, a kill a from freshman
Ben Robbins, and a kill from McKiernan put Etown in front 11-8. Holding a four point advantage at 16-12, the Blue Jays took hold of the set, rattling off four straight points to take the 20-12 lead. Etown let this momentum carry them to complete the sweep, taking the third stanza, 25-13.
Elizabethtown concludes the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, March 29 against #14 Juniata. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
