Blue Jays Win Landmark Conference Opener Against Royals

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Graduate student Tyler Dunbar pitched his second complete game of the season, leading the Elizabethtown College baseball team to the 5-3 win over Scranton in both teams Landmark Conference opener Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Royals fall to 8-2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Landmark.

Sophomore AJ Bednar went 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior James Vito also finished with two hits, registering a double and two runs scored. Senior Tyler McGonigle tallied two runs scored, going 1-3 with an RBI.

Scranton was paced by sophomore Corey Zientek, finishing the game 2-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

The Blue Jays wasted little time taking the lead, finding a run in the first inning. Leading off the game with a single up the middle, graduate student Andrew Fisher worked his way over to third with two outs. Bednar stepped in and knocked a single up the middle, scoring Fisher and giving Etown the early 1-0 advantage.

After the Royals tied the game in the top of the third, the Blue Jays responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and McGonigle on third, senior Robbie Bertucio reached on a throwing error by the third basemen, bringing the run in from third and giving Etown the 2-1 lead. Bednar then came up big yet again, lacing a double down the left field line and plating Bertucio to make the score 3-1 after five.

Scranton once again closed with one after scoring a run in the sixth, but the Blue Jays tallied a run in the seventh and the eighth to move in front 5-2. Etown took advantage of another error by the Royals in the bottom of the seventh, as Bertucio reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, plating McGonigle from third. McGonigle then came up with an RBI in the next, reaching on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, scoring Vito and putting Etown up 5-2.

The Royals managed to get one run back in the ninth, but Dunbar induced a game ending groundout with the tying at the plate, giving the Blue Jays the 5-3 victory.

Dunbar (2-3) went the distance, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and struck out two. Dunbar is fourth in the Landmark with 22 strikeouts.

Junior Hunter Ralston (0-1) allowed one earned run on seven hits and struck out two in the losing effort.

Elizabethtown will finish its series against Scranton with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 20. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
