ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore
Jared Archer drained a three-pointer with 3.4 seconds remaining to give the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team the 67-66 win over Catholic Sunday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 8-12 on the season and 3-7 in league play, while the Cardinals fall to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the Landmark.
Archer came off the bench to score 11 points with three rebounds and three assists. Senior
Jalin Robinson finished with a game-high 24 points and career-high eight rebounds. Junior
Dylan Rowe scored seven points, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and registered a game-high two blocks.
Sophomore Jesse Hafemeister led Catholic with 22 points, while classmate Colby Martins came off the bench to finish with 17 points.
Etown came up out firing, scoring the first nine points of the game capped off by a three from freshman
Rance Russo, forcing a Cardinals' timeout with just under 17 minutes remaining. The Blue Jays continued to lead through most of the first half until the final 1:42 when Catholic closed on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 34 heading into the locker room.
It was a similar start to the second half, as the Etown once again pushed its advantage to nine after Robinson knocked down three from the free-throw line, making the score 45-36 with 17:41 remaining. The Blue Jays then pushed its lead to 11Â with just under 14 minutes remaining, as Archer found fifth-year senior
Ryan Fitzpatrick for the open three and the 55-44 advantage. Â
Catholic continued to battle and managed to take its first lead of the game at the 7:08 mark, as Martins drilled his second-straight three, giving the Cardinals' a 60-59 lead. The visitors pushed its advantage to five (64-59) with 5:47 left in the game, but a Rowe layup and a three by Robinson tied the score at 64 with just under four minutes to play.Â
The two teams continued to battle of the defensive end, going scoreless for the next 3:05 until Haffemeister knocked down an off-balance putting Catholic up 66-64 with 51 seconds on the clock. The Cardinals then got the ball back with 42 seconds left making Etown play defense. Martins collected the ball at the top of the key and drove at Archer in the paint. The sophomore stood tall, forcing the miss and giving the Blue Jays a final chance with 12 seconds on the clock. After grabbing the rebound, Rowe found Archer who pushed it up to the Robinson. The senior created space and then found Archer on the left side for the who drilled it with 3.4 seconds on the clock, giving the Blue Jays the 67-66 lead. Catholic has one last chance but Hafemeister's three went begging, as Etown locked up its third Landmark Conference win of the season.
The Blue Jays shot 50% (24-48) from the floor and made 10-22 (45.5%) from three. The Cardinals finished the game 24-66 (36.4%) overall and shot 37.5% (9-24) from three.Â
Elizabethtown remains at home on Wednesday, February 9 against Juniata. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
