Big Second Quarter Propels Men's Lacrosse to First Victory of the Season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team opened up a close game in the second quarter, outscoring Arcadia 6-1 in the period, to earn its first win of the season, 18-11, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Blue Jays improve to 1-1 one the season, while the Knights drop their season-opener.

Senior Owen Yake scored a career-high five goals to pace Etown. Senior Micah Ballew was a close second on the team with four goals, while classmate Nick Cost finished with five points on one goal and four assists. Senior Alex Kilgour racked up a career-high five points as well on two goals and three assists. 

Junior Brian Albertsen carried Arcadia with four points on three goals and one assist.

Tied at three midway through the first quarter, Yake and ballew scored back-to-back goals to take a 5-3 lead with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. The Knights, however, managed to get one back with two minutes on the clock as senior Wesley Sporer fired one home, making the score 5-4 after one.

The Blue Jays snatched all the momentum in the second quarter, starting the period on a 6-0 run capped off by a goal from Kilgour. Sophomore Gavin Gismondi racked up three goals over this stretch to lead the charge. The Knights ended the run with a goal with 2:19 remaining in the half, but Etown took a 12-5 lead into the break.

Etown continued to control the game in the second half, not allowing Arcadia to get any closer than six, as the Blue Jays completed its first win of the season, 18-11. 

Senior Danny Gilbert had a career day, winning a career-high 20 face-offs and picking up a career-best 14 ground balls. Sophomore Connor Stewart and Gismondu picked up seven and six ground balls respectively, while Etown caused nine turnovers led junior Riley Langen and sophomore Gio Raso with two apiece.

Sophomore Brayden Franey (1-0) earned his first career victory in goal, making 10 saves on 30 shots faced.

Elizabethtown hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday, February 26 at Stockton. Opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
