Blue Jays' defense keys big win over Cabrini

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The offense and defense worked in sync for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team on Sunday in their big win over Cabrini to stay unbeaten on the season. DaniRae Renno and Summer McNulty combined for 37 points and the Jays' defense forced 23 turnovers in the 69-42 victory.

Cabrini (2-8) began the game on a 7-2 run over the first two and a half minutes as it took a little bit for the Blue Jays to get going. Renno made good on back-to-back baskets for Elizabethtown (7-0) to make it a one-point game before Lindsay Boyd came up with one of her three steals and went the other way for two to give Etown the lead, 8-7. Two possession later, Boyd's pull-up jumper along the baseline was good and the Jays were ahead by three.

Elizabethtown led by one, 13-12, at the end of the first quarter.

The Blue Jays took control of the contest in the second quarter as they outscored the Cavaliers 23-6 and held them to just 1-for-8 from the floor. Four of Cabrini's six points in the second came from the foul line.

McNulty pumped in eight second-quarter points and was one of seven different scorers for the Jays in the quarter. Renno added four, Cyleigh Wilson knocked down a trey from the left wing, and Boyd, Cass Peris, Taylor Huyck, and Kaeli Romanowski also contributed baskets for Etown as they shot 10-for-20 from the field.

They would double up Cabrini by the end of the second and took a 36-18 lead into halftime.

It was more of the same from Elizabethtown as they shot 50 percent from the floor and held the Cavaliers to only nine points in the third and 21 percent shooting. McNulty and Renno supplied 10 of the Jays' 17 third-quarter points.

McNulty began the fourth rolling off a screen out top and hitting on her pull-up jumper. She then found Renno inside on the drive and dish for the layup. The duo had the first seven points of the fourth for Etown.

Romanowski turned one of her four steals, tied for a team-high, into an easy bucket midway through the quarter as Cabrini had some trouble handling the Jays' press. Later in the quarter, Allyia Kennedy fed a nice pass into the post for Peris, who turned and got the layup to go with 3:48 left.

Megan Desmet took a pass from Clare marchese and dropped in a three late in the game as the shot clock was winding down before time expired.

The Blue Jays held Cabrini to 28 percent shooting, the third game this season the defense has forced the opponent to shoot less than 30 percent. It was also the fourth game Etown forced at least 20 turnovers (23; 20 points off turnovers) and the fifth time this season they've allowed fewer than 45 points.

Renno led all scorers with 19 points and 8 rebounds. McNulty added 18 points and five assists. Jessica King and Romanowski each had four steals while Boyd and McNulty had three apiece.

The women's basketball team will host the Yonnie Kauffman Blue Jay Tournament next weekend. York (Pa.) and Washington & Lee play the opening game at 2 p.m. while the Blue Jays will host Delaware Valley at 4 p.m.
