Gonzalez pin secures comeback win for Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The first dual win of the season came in exciting fashion for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team Friday night at Thompson Gymnasium. Down 22-18 to Wilkes with one match to go, junior Dorian Gonzalez got the pinfall victory with just 38 seconds left in his bout to give the Blue Jays a 24-22 win over the Colonels.

The teams agreed upon starting at 165, so it was senior Brian Schneider's chance to kick off the match the right way for the Jays and he did just that. Schneider earned his fourth pinfall victory of the year at 4:49 over Jaryn Hartranft to put Elizabethtown (1-1) 6-0 right away.

Wilkes (0-2) got a decision at 174 and three points back to take a 6-3 deficit into 184. That's where Will Davis controlled much of his bout with John DeVito. Davis would move to 11-3 overall on the year with a 6-3 decision to push the lead back up to six for Etown, 9-3.

The Colonels got positive results from their three nationally-ranked wrestlers at 197, 285, and 125 to double up the Blue Jays by 133, 18-9.

Scotty Reagan flipped some momentum back Elizabethtown's way with his 12-3 major decision over Cadden Kucek. That got the Jays back within five, 18-13.

Wilkes countered with a major decision of their own to nullify those four points for Etown and bump their advantage back up to nine, 22-13 with two matches to go.

Shane Strausser dominated Ben Grater at 149 finished his match after two periods with a 15-0 tech fall to provide Gonzalez the opportunity to win the match.

Gonzalez jumped out to a 2-0 advantage right away with a takedown and controlled Nikko Partsanakis, slowly building up his lead. He was in major decision territory until the last 45 seconds of the third period. Gonzalez was able to get Partsanakis flipped over and with 38 seconds to go, the fall was awarded to give Elizabethtown the six points to win the match, 24-22, in thrilling fashion.

The wrestling team will have the weekend off of competition before hosting Shippensburg at Thompson Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 22, at 6 p.m.
