Blue Jays Pick Up Wins against Medaille, St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-- The Elizabethtown volleyball team earned their 16th win of the season as they swept Medaille, 3-0 and defeated host St. John Fisher, 3-1 in a tri-match, Saturday afternoon. 

In Elizabethtown's first match of the day, the Blue Jays defeated Medaille, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-13). Set one started out with Medaille leading, 8-5 after three consecutive service aces. Etown took the lead after Gianna Krinock and Gracie Britten each smacked down a kill. The Blue Jays then tallied the next four points as they led, 14-10.  Two kills from Katie Scaggs bookended a four-point run. Through the end of the set the teams traded points but one final kill from Georgianna Kahley gave the Blue Jays a, 25-22 win. Etown came out hot to start set two, taking the first four points. Two Maverick errors extended Elizabethtown's lead, 7-2. The Jays then rattled off four points in a row with the help from Emma Bitner's two service aces. The Blue Jays kept rolling taking a 10-point lead as Krinock put down two kills. Medialle then went on a 4-0 run with which Etown responded with a 4-0 run of their own. A Medaille attack error sealed Etowns, 25-16 win. With proficient hitting (.438) in set three, the Blue Jays and Mavericks kept it close to start with a 10-8 after two aces from Bryanna Miller. Two service aces from Kambrie Hepler jumped Etown to a 19-12 lead. Etown recorded the final two points with kills from Kahley and Becca Ayers to win, 25-13.

Kahley and Miller led the team with 11 kills apiece while hitting .364, .381 respectively. Krinock totaled eight kills and added 10 digs. Jena Minnick finished the match with 30 assists: her second most this season.

In the second match of the day against St. John Fisher, Elizabethtown was victorious, 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19). St. John Fisher came out to a two-point lead following an Etown attack error. The Blue Jays took the lead at 13-11 after two Cardinal attack errors and a kill from Kara Davies. After trading points, the Cardinals ran away with the final six points to win, 25-20. Set two was close, as Etown led 7-6 after kills from Scaggs and Miller. After keeping it close throughout the set, Elizabethtown went on a 4-0 run after an ace from Hepler. The Blue Jays ended the set taking the last four points to win, 25-20.

In set three, kills from Miller, Courtney Westman, and Krinock put the Jays up, 8-6. After keeping it close through most of the set, Elizabethtown spread the gap after a Cardinal attack error, leading, 17-14. St. John Fisher then took the next four points to tie up the set. Etown went on a 7-2 run winning the set, 25-20. Set four saw the teams in a back-n-forth battle and after kills from Scaggs and Davies the Blue Jays led, 13-12. An Elizabethtown kill and service ace brought the Blue Jays closer to match point. Two kills from Davies ended the set, 25-19.

Elizabethtown recorded 11 blocks their most since their match against Rutgers-Camden, September 24th.  Miller led the match with 14 kills and 12 digs. Davies hit a season high .529 hitting percentage and 10 kills. Minnick tallied 22 assists while Bitner added 16.

Elizabethtown returns to conference action, Wednesday October 12th as they host No. 3 Juniata at 7 PM.
