SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team won its third straight road game at Scranton on Saturday as
Ryan Hepler netted the game-winner in the 71st minute to help the Blue Jays remain unbeaten in Landmark Conference play with a 2-1 win over the Royals.
Jake Groh scored his team-leading fourth goal in the first half.
Scoring chances were at a premium in the game as only 11 shots were registered between the two shots over 90 minutes. Elizabethtown (6-4-2, 2-0-1 Landmark) finished the game with a slim 6-5 advantage in shots.
In the eighth minute, the Blue Jays had a free kick from a little under 25 yards out on the right side of the field.
Cade Brubaker sent an in-swinger toward the penalty spot area and met the head of Groh. The junior powered a header off the inside of the left post and in to give Etown a 1-0 lead in the early going.
Anthony Rizzi answered for Scranton (7-4-1, 1-2 Landmark) in the 21st minute to tie the game at 1-1. It was the only Royals' shot of the first half.
Later in the second half,
Mehluko Letsoalo received a throw in down the right sideline and was able to beat a defender and get end line before crossing the ball. His cross went back toward the PK spot and Hepler ran onto it and smashed a one-time effort into the goal for his third of the season to give the Jays the 2-1 lead in the 71st minute.
Kelvin Del Cid made two of his three second-half saves over the final 18 minutes to keep the lead with Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays will host Muhlenberg on Wednesday, October 12, at 7 p.m.
